Pro Tennis

This wasn’t my first time watching professional tennis at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic. However, it was the first time I watched Andy Roddick play matches three days in a row, along with the Bryan Brothers, newcomer John Isner, and a host of others. Today’s title match (Roddick vs. Isner) was awesome, though Isner’s match with Monfils last night was incredibly exciting. That kid, who’s ranked 419 (!) fought his way to the finals as a wildcard, and (according to the program notes today) is only the third person to do so at Legg Mason.

But wow was it hot. My asthma, which hasn’t been a problem since I arrived in D.C., was acting up because of the poor air quality.

And, of course, I don’t have a stinking USB cable here at the place I’m housesitting â€” the cable has become, like so much of my life, a casualty of spending all my time moving between three locations.

So, no pictures, for now.

Tour of the Gila: Criterium

Before leaving for the Mets/Diamondbacks game yesterday, I spent some time downtown watching the Tour of the Gila. A 5-day stage race that comes to Silver City each year, a crowd favorite is the Saturday Criterion: 40 laps around a downtown loop (fewer laps for non-pro divisions).

More photos below. I wasn’t able to stay for the women or the pro divisions, but Meredith was on hand, so you should run by her Flickr place to see pics from those events. She also has some great shots from the kids’ races.

What I did last night…

My dad is a huge Mets fan, so he did what he could to score us some tickets to one of their games in Phoenix this week. We took off this afternoon for the third game in the series, which the Mets won 6-2.

There was a strong contingent of New York fans, which made us feel a bit better about cheering on the visitors, but my pops is pretty die hard so I don’t think we would have held back either way.

It’s 4 a.m. (we drove back to Silver City after the game) and I’m beat, so it’s time for me to get some sleep. I’ll have more photos from the game â€” and some shots of the early Tour of the Gila races in the downtown Criterium on Saturday â€” later this morning.

I know the time usually has another meaning, but, this morning, it signifies when I’m leaving the office.

I have to work again in 7.5 hours.

RMAC Volleyball Conference Championship Day 1, part II

Well, we didn’t leave the WNMU Fieldhouse until 10:30 last night, so I didn’t update my last post. Instead, you get this one!

In the third game of the night, No. 4 Mesa State College defeated No. 5 Regis University in five sets. This was an incredibly close match, because both teams poured their hearts into every point. There were some long rallies, great hitting on both sides of the net, and great defense as well.

Top-seeded Western New Mexico University was able to topple No. 8 CSU-Pueblo in four sets. I was a bit apprehensive before this game, because Pueblo had beat Western here earlier in the season. And while the ThunderWolves fought hard, the ‘Stangs were able to pull it out.

So, tonight’s semi-final schedule is:

5:30 p.m. No. 3 Metro State vs. No. 2 Nebraska-Kearney
8:00 p.m. No. 4 Mesa State vs. No. 1 Western New Mexico

RMAC Volleyball Conference Championship Day 1

I didn’t make it to the first match of the 2006 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball championship tournament, but third seed Metro State defeated No. 6 Fort Lewis College in five games, 22-30, 30-26, 28-30, 30-28, 15-11.

The second match of the afternoon featured Nebraska-Kearney, the No. 2 seed, and No. 7 UC-Colorado Springs. The Lopers handily defeated the Mountain Lions in three games, 30-24, 30-21 and 30-17.

More photos and an update on the Mesa State/Regis University and WNMU/CSU-Pueblo games later tonight.

1st Annual VVA Golf Benefit

I attended Grant County’s First Annual Golf Benefit for the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 358. Fifteen teams of four took part in the scramble, which raised money for the local chapter.

WNMU Football def. Western State (Colo.)

From the WSC web site:

Western New Mexico rushed for 287 yards and scored a 24-0 victory over Western State today at Mountaineer Bowl.

Western New Mexico improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in RMAC play. Western State fell to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in conference.

Dakota Woodard led the Mustangs with 14 rushes for 105 yards, while Lateef Azziz rushed 16 times for 78 yards and Rod Windsor went eight times for 55 yards.

As a team, Western New Mexico gained 396 yards of total offense.

After a missed Western State field goal attempt, Western New Mexico jumped on the board with a 15-yard pass from Windsor to Josh Gill. The Mustangs held a 10-0 lead at the half on a 27-yard field goal.

Windsor opened the scoring in the second half with a 27-yard run and then Gill and Windsor connected again for a score – this time from 61 yards out.

Friday Night Lights

I hate to be so cheesy with the title, but, well, it is that time of year.

Cobre High School vs. Silver High School
The Silver and Cobre high school football teams met on Friday night in their annual Red-Blue matchup. Silver came away with the win, but the game was a good one, and that’s what counts. A small sample of the photos I shot during the game are below (click for larger versions).

WNMU vs. Fort Lewis College

Western also had their home opener this weekend. They fell to Fort Lewis (which was ranked No. 1 in the conference) though, I daresay, they did quite well despite some turnovers. When they get the first-game jitters out, they’ll be ready to kick some tail. As before, click the photos below for larger versions.
