My colleague, Mary Alice Murphy, touched on this in yesterday’s edition of the Silver City Daily Press, but here’s data from some of the air-monitoring sites set up around Hurley for Tuesday’s demolition. Most of the trend lines appear to show an increase in the early morning prior to the demolition, with particulate levels dropping [...]

This video was shot by Jeramiah Portillo, an Eastern New Mexico University student whose father, John, grew up in Hurley. John won the raffle sponsored by the Hurley Pride Committee to push the plunger that brought the smokestacks down: you can see him in the video. I hope to have a higher quality version available [...]

Phelps Dodge has announced the new date for the demolition of the Hurley Smokestacks: Tuesday, June 5. The time will again be 10 a.m. I meant to post this earlier, but this is the plan (PDF) for monitoring air quality during the demolition.

You can find my and Meredith’s story on the public hearing here (PDF). I just had a few observations from the hearing: It seemed as though Doug Littlejohn, the GRIP lawyer, was almost trying to purposefully antagonize District Judge J.C. Robinson. After Robinson made a point of saying he had viewed a video of the [...]

District Judge J.C. Robinson ruled against the Gila Resources Information Project this morning, denying their petition for a temporary injunction to halt the demolition of the Hurley smokestacks. The stacks will still not be demolished this week, a spokesman said, because the company needs time to prepare the chimneys. More later.

I’ll have more this afternoon, and you can wait for today’s Silver City Daily Press for complete coverage.

I received a copy of the plan from the New Mexico Environment Department, and will get a PDF up soon. I did, however, want to include the following map of the planned air monitoring sites: As I said, more later.

My most recent article appeared in the Saturday edition of the Daily Press, but won’t be online until Tuesday, so head over to the Santa Fe New Mexican web site to see what the Associated Press did with it. I always find it interesting when the AP rewrites something I’ve sent, since we’re always rewriting [...]

So, to add a little more information to my earlier post on the Hurley smokestacks, and to respond to a comment on that post, here’s a copy of the petition (PDF) the Gila Resources Information Project filed with the 6th Judicial District Court requesting a temporary injunction to halt Phelps Dodge from demolishing the stacks [...]

In 12 days, Phelps Dodge Mining Company plans to demolish the smokestacks at its Hurley smelter, which is being dismantling after the company found more efficient techniques for extracting copper ore. The stacks (one of which was built in the 1930s) are something of a landmark in Grant County — you can see them from [...]
