The monthly meeting of the ACLU will include a video presentation on voting rights, illustrating how the electoral power of minorities is often diluted through the manipulation of political districts by those in power, as well as by intimidation of minority voters at the polls. The video also focuses on key portions of the Voting Rights Act that are up for renewal by Congress in 2007.

Both ACLU and non-ACLU members are welcome. For more information, contact Larry Sullivan at 534-9500 or Barbara Tegge at stargazer@signalpeak.net.

A free lecture, “Indigenous Latino Medicine in Grant County,” will be presented by Gilbert Arizaga, M.D., at the Silver City Museum at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, April 30. The program is the second in a series presented by the Museum in conjunction with its featured exhibit, “Good For What Ails You: A Golden Climate Cures Silver City’s Economic Blues.” Arizaga, the author of multiple publications on traditional and cultural medicine, served as an advisor in the exhibit’s development. He will discuss the centuries-old folk healing practices found throughout the American Southwest, Mexico, and Latin America, including herbal medicine and curanderismo.

Arizaga, a graduate of Cobre High School and Western New Mexico University, earned his medical degree from the University of New Mexico in 1974. His residencies in pediatrics and dermatology were from the University of Arizona, and he is board certified in pediatrics, dermatology, and hospice and palliative care. Arizaga, who integrates into his medical practice the concepts of indigenous medicine taught to him by Latino elders in his family, says, “Curanderismo is a quintessential model for holistic medicine, expressing the inability to separate spirit, mind, body, peoples, and the earth.”

“Good For What Ails You,” continuing its run at the Silver City Museum, examines southwest New Mexico’s long tradition as a place of health and healing. The exhibit focuses on the health-seeker era of the early twentieth century, when tubercular patients flocked to this region in hopes of a cure. For more information, contact the Museum at (505) 538-5921, or e-mail info@silvercitymuseum.org.

Georges, who hosts a TV literary review, receives packages containing videos of himself with his family — shot secretly from the street — and alarming obscure drawings. He has no idea who may be sending them. Gradually the footage on the tapes becomes more personal, suggesting the sender has known Georges for some time. Georges feels a sense of menace hanging over him and his family, but as no direct threat has been made, the police refuse to help . . .

“When Dad used to get out his lap steel and electric guitars, we’d invite the neighborhood kids over and sing country songs. I’d sit across from my dad and read the music upside-down so I could turn the pages for him. I developed an ear for harmony early on and hardly ever sang the melody,” she muses, “and it drove my little brother crazy.”

For those of you interested in Silver City’s water future, the Town of Silver City Utilities Department will be having a public meeting to discuss the update to the town’s 40-year water plan on Thursday, March 30 at 7:00 pm at the Grant Co. Administration Building, 1400 Hwy.180 East.

Dave Romero from Balleau Groundwater Inc. will make a presentation on their report “SUPPLEMENT ON WATER USE AND WELLFIELD SERVICE –TOWN OF SILVER CITY WATER PLAN” and answer questions.

You can download a copy of the report on the town’s webpage at www.townofsilvercity.org . The conclusions and recommendations from the report are included below.

Thanks,

Allyson Siwik, Executive Director

Gila Resources Information Project

305A North Cooper St.

Silver City, NM 88061

505.538.8078

asiwik@zianet.com

– ————————

CONCLUSIONS

1. The Town of Silver City wellfield is capable of producing water to supply the high growth rate of 2.9 percent per year for about the next 30 years. After this time, an alternative source of water, well deepening or replacement wells would be necessary to maintain that high growth rate after a 40-year planning period.

2. The Town of Silver City wellfield is capable of producing water to supply a medium growth rate of 1.45 percent per year for the next 40 years.

3. Future water demand for the Town of Silver City is uncertain, but for planning purposes, high and low growth rates (2.9 and 1.2 percent) account for the demand required to supply all connections to the Town water system, while recognizing trends of service area expansion and population change that have been observed in the past.
