Things I’ve learned living in the big city

A one-hour commute isn’t that bad, even when you do it twice a day.

When I was still living in Baltimore, I commuted from there to New Carrollton by car via the B-W Parkway and (for an exit or two) the Capital Beltway, then hopped on the Metro to either DC or Pentagon City. This combined trip was 35 miles and 90 minutes one way… and I did that five days a week for over thirteen years. Is it any wonder I moved to Silver City? :)

When the apartment shuttle and the Metro team up with great timing, the commute is only 40 minutes. That never happens, however, so I have to adjust accordingly to make it to work on time. Still, it’s stories like yours that reinforce the idea that I don’t have it that bad.

Ahem.
I live in Baltimore.
My drive to work is 1.7 miles or (depending on stoplights) 5 minutes.
(And yes, I do have to drive, the employers require it. Otherwise I’d invest in a bike.)
Did I plan this all well or what?
I’m going to quit gloating now. Somewhere, something is gearing up to give me a karmic kick in the pants.

I get up, amble down the hall to the study and I’m there. :-)
It’s fun being retired.
It wasn’t so much fun commuting into the District of Columbia from suburban Virginia for 15 years. :-(
