However, it is not reasonable to try to force the industry to be 20% cleaner than conventional oil. Even if we match conventional oil, we will still be way ahead. We desperately need this technology. We only have around 30-40 years left on conventional oil, and there will be 9 billion mouths to feed. We need to be very open to CTL if we expect human life on this planet to continue. It takes more energy to produce ethanol than we get back from it, and even if 100% of our corn lands were put into ethanol production, we could only supply 15% of our national energy need. In fact, if 100% of our US land went into ethanol production, we still could not do it!
