Monday Morning Photo Dump: Birthday Present Edition

Polinating IIIOn Friday, I got a new lens for my birthday — the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM — and subsequently spent the rest of the weekend hunched down or behind a tripod.

I’ve always been intrigued by macro photography, and had a hard time trying to do it with the kit lens (Sigma 28-70mm zoom) which came with my Rebel XTi. I did a lot of research (these posts at Brian Auer’s Epic Edits and Photocritic were very helpful) and made myself a wishlist, and was sure to include some prime lenses.

I need to spend some more time with the lens, and need to work on better depth of field. There’s not much to begin with, so it looks as though I’ll have to try to coax as much out of the lens as possible. Hooray learning new glass!

Still, there’s no denying a few facts:

  1. The lens is amazingly sharp
  2. You can really get down close to subjects
  3. The lens is amazingly sharp

  3. Hi! I have to laugh…I bought that EXACT same lens yesterday! It’s on backorder from Canon, I should get it in a couple weeks. Your photos so far with it are AMAZING!!!

And I have to tell you, there was much hand wringing and discussing about spending the money on this lens.

You have now TOTALLY validated my decision. THANK YOU!!

:) Great minds thinking alike and all that….

  4. Karen, I know the lens won’t disappoint. I’ve enjoyed my time with it thus far, and I’m ready to experiment some more to see just what I can do with it.

And thank you Serena and Laura for the kind words!
