Gov. Bill Richardson will push next year’s Legislature to ban cockfighting in New Mexico.
Richardson said at a news conference in Santa Fe on Wednesday that he would support a ban and would actively try to get the proposal approved by lawmakers.
New Mexico and Louisiana are the only states that still allow cockfighting.
Proposals to ban cockfighting have repeatedly failed in the Legislature in the past.
Democratic Sen. Mary Jane Garcia of Doña Ana says she will sponsor a measure to outlaw cockfighting.
Richardson made his announcement at a news conference in which he outlined several animal protection proposals.
