Conspiracy theories aside, the timing of this announcement is interesting:
Meanwhile, a senior court official said a verdict against Saddam Hussein and seven co-defendants charged with crimes against humanity in connection with an anti-Shiite crackdown in the 1980s will be announced Nov. 5.
The emphasis there is mine. The story goes on to say that the announcement was to have come this week. That’s three weeks less time for the story to be in the news, which is bad for Republicans, who I’m sure would have pounded Saddam’s sentence to death (no pun intended).
Of course, Saddam was a brutal dictator who slaughtered those who dissented. He should be found guilty, and he should be punished accordingly. Nonetheless, and either way you slice it, the date is coincidental at least.
Just in the nick of time
